3D hand posture recognition using multicam

    Get PDF
This paper presents the hand posture recognition in 3D using the MultiCam, a monocular 2D/3D camera developed by Center of Sensorsystems (ZESS). The :VlultiCam is a camera which is capable to provide high resolution of color data acquired from CMOS sensors and low resolution of distance (or range) data calculated based on timeof- flight (ToF) technology using Photonic Mixer Device (PMD) sensors. The availability of the distance data allows the hand posture to be recognized in z-axis direction without complex computational algorithms which also enables the program to work in real-time processing as well as eliminates the background effectively. The hand posture recognition will employ a simple but robust algorithm by checking the number of fingers detected around virtually created circle centered at the Center of Mass (CoM) of the hand and therefore classifies the class associated with a particular hand posture. At the end of this paper, the technique that uses intersection between the circle and fingers as the method to classify the hand posture which entails the MultiCam capability is proposed. This technique is able to solve the problem of orientation, size and distance invariants by utilizing the distance data

Detecting Turns And Correcting Headings Using Low-Cost INS

    Get PDF
Unlike industrial-grade Inertial Navigation Sensors (INSs) that can provide credible tracking performance, more affordable consumer-grade low-cost INSs produce drifts in heading angles and positions that result in a poor tracking accuracy. Researchers have proposed drift correction methods that attempt to attenuate the drifts when walking straight along the dominant directions is detected. While determining the type of a pedestrian's walk is essential before the heading corrections are made, the current detection techniques heavily rely on thresholding. This paper proposes a novel threshold-less method to detect turns in walking by using pelvic rotation and correct the heading angle based on consumer-grade INSs. The experiments indicate the proposed turn detector and heading correction methods produce very good results which can be applied for future pedestrian tracking, activity recognition or rehabilitation

    Get PDF
Finding shortest and safest path during emergency situation is critical. In this paper, an indoor navigation during an emergency time is investigated using the combination of Voronoi Diagram and fuzzy number. The challenge in indoor navigation is to analyses the network when the shortest path algorithm does not work as always expected. There are some existing methods to generate the network model. First, this paper will discuss the feasibility and accuracy of each method when it is implemented on building environment. Next, this paper will discuss selected algorithms that determine the selection of the best route during an emergency situation. The algorithm has to make sure that the selected route is the shortest and the safest route to the destination. During a disaster, there are many uncertainties to deal with in determining the shortest and safest route. Fuzzy logic can be hardly called for to deal with these uncertainties. Based on sensor data, this paper will also discuss how to solve shortest path problem using a fuzzy number

Effect of Distance on the Maximum Data Transfer for Different Mounting Elevations of XBee Pro Module in Viral Advertisement System

    Get PDF
This paper presents a study on the effect of distance between XBee Pro modules to the maximum data transfer for three different mounting elevations. The study has been conducted by using two units of XBee Pro modules which each represents a receiver and a transmitter. The transmitter is mounted in three different elevations which are 0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 meter from the ground while the receiver is fixed at the same elevation. When the transmitter continuously transmits the wireless signal carrying its particular address, the receiver will detect the signal address once the range of communication of both receiver and transmitter intersects. The results obtained are the values of data size, in bytes, with respect to the distance between receiver and transmitter for different mounting elevations of transmitter. These data are then converted into graph that illustrates the data size-distance characteristics for each mounting elevation. Finally, the best mounting elevation is to be identified based on the result obtained

This paper presents a study on ranking of 27 identified innovation related factors which influencing Artificial Intelligence (AI) performance in UAE. These factors were clustered into four groups namely process innovation; management capabilities; personal expertise and organization structure. A questionnaire was designed based on these factors where respondents were required to gauge the influence of these factors using Likert scale. Respondents were from three UAE organisations which are Dubai Police, Dubai Electricity & Water Authority Dewa, and Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company. A total of 384 valid responses from the questionnaire survey were analysed for its reliability using Cronbach alpha criterion. Then the data was analysed for its mean score and standard deviation values for each of the factors to determine the rank of each factor and also its influence on the organisation performance. The study found that the mean scores for the factors are in the range from 2.90 to 3.56 while for the average mean score for the groups are from 3.15 to 3.44. the study also found that two factors which are management capabilities and artificial intelligence are highly influencing the organisational performance while the other three factors which process innovation, personal expertise and organisational structure are moderately influencing the UAE organisational performance. The findings of this study will ably provide a better understanding of innovation related factors and how it affects overall performance

A critical review on society’s perception on the usage of mosque

    Get PDF
The uses or functions of mosques in the modern era has significantly evolved through the years since the very first mosque ever was built by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The spread of Islam throughout the world results in the different adaptation or representation of Islam in terms of architecture and symbolism of the religion. The result of evolution of the uses and the architectural symbolism of the mosques creates a stereotypical thinking of current local societies of what mosques are all about. Back in the days, the mosque was a place for the local society to connect to one another, held religious activities and other activities related to the local community. The mosque of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) does not emphasize on the aesthetical values but emphasize more on the function and needs of the local society. Mosques in the modern era emphasizes more on the aesthetical values and grandness rather than the function and needs of the local society. The main objective of this research is to identify what are the dominant factors that affect the stereotypical thinking of local society towards the usage of the mosque and how does the aesthetic values give impacts to the thinking of the local society

The level of technology acceptance of foreign worker towards Powerpoint (PPT)in Safety and Health Induction Course (SHIC)

    Get PDF
Attending Safety and Health Induction Course (SHIC) is compulsory for construction workers before they can enter and work in this site. After attending this training, they will get the Green Card which allows them to start working on the sites. However, the PowerPoint (PPT) still be used as an existing medium which has been used to disseminate the safety information in SHIC using the Malay language and English as a mediator. Thus, this study examines the level of technology acceptance of foreign worker towards PPT after attending the training, which assessed using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in order to seek their response. It is important to seek the foreign workers’ response towards PPT which providing empirical evidence to the CIDB, trainer and employers’ management for future improvement. So, TAM has been used to study the factors which impact the foreign workers’ acceptance level towards PPT.The factors contained perceive usefulness (PU), perceive ease of use (PEOU), attitudes towards using (A) and behavioural intention to use (BI).Thereby to seek the foreign workers acceptance level towards PPT in SHIC, convenient sampling has been chosen in this study. The area covered in this study was Kedah and Perlis and it is limited to 64 foreign workers due to the constraint and limitation. The analyzed results reveal that the foreign workers perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use shows the moderate positive relationship towards the PPT.While, foreign workers attitude and behaviour intention to use shows low correlation with no significant impact towards the PPT.The finding suggests that PPT still useful to be used as a learning medium, but needs to be upgraded and improve regarding the content, text, video, language usage, functions, interfaces and others. As a future result for this improvement, it will lead to a better learning medium, encourages them to stay motivated and focus while increasing the construction performance and decreasing the accidents

The uniqueness of iris texture makes it one of the reliable physiological biometric traits compare to the other biometric traits. In this paper, we investigate a different level of fusion approach in iris image. Although, a number of iris recognition methods has been proposed in recent years, however most of them focus on the feature extraction and classification method. Less number of method focuses on the information fusion of iris images. Fusion is believed to produce a better discrimination power in the feature space, thus we conduct an analysis to investigate which fusion level is able to produce the best result for iris recognition system. Experimental analysis using CASIA dataset shows feature level fusion produce 99% recognition accuracy. The verification analysis shows the best result is GAR = 95% at the FRR = 0.1

Analysis of unimorph piezoceramic patches on damped square shaped plate

    Get PDF
Active damping using piezoelectric element is one of the effective techniques to counter vibration problems. A 3D finite-element model is developed as part of investigation for damping control. The piezoelectric patches are surface bonded on quadrilateral thin plate and supported with spring damper elements. The main goal of this paper is to investigate mechanical characteristics of piezoceramic array on membrane and the effect of force excitation using small motor and electric excitation on the system. The system setup produced small vibration displacement and does not displace the plate beyond elastic strain region. The results show the linear behavior of piezoceramic and the correlation between electric excitation, motor vibration and displacement at the centre of the plate at different frequency range. The mode shapes and natural frequencies at low frequency spectrum are also presented. Therefore, the results can be used as reference to develop damping system with aid of piezoelectric patches
